Length: 676 minutes Distributor: 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment DVD Release Date: 12/07/2004 Cast: Alan Alda
Plot: One of the most popular and innovative television series in history, MASH aired for a record eleven years, and its finale episode attracted a larger number of viewers than any other single episode before or since. Based on Robert Altman's feature film of the same name, and set during the Korean War, the show was initially conceived as a critique on the Vietnam War, but eventually adopted a more character-driven, rather than situation- or issue-driven, plot. With a large ensemble cast, a few main players were in evidence, including "Hawkeye" Pierce (Alan Alda) and his buddy John McIntyre, two top-notch doctors more interested in booze and women than operating. Dr. Frank Burns (Larry Linville) and the Senior Nurse, Lieutenant Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan (Loretta Swit) were the two staunch military enforcers who were forever trying to get the two "playboys" court martialed. Ltd. Col. Henry Blake (McLean Stevenson) was the ostensible camp commander, but the place was really run by Corporal Walter "Radar" O'Reilly (Gary Burghoff), who had superhuman hearing and knew what Blake was thinking before Blake did himself. Max Klinger (Jamie Farr) was the corporal constantly in pursuit of a section 8 discharge, and Father Francis Mulcahy (William Christopher) was the kindly local priest. Season 7 includes the episodes: "Commander Pierce, "Peace On Us," "Our Finest Hour," "None Like it Hot," "Major Ego," "Baby, it's Cold Outside," "Dear Comrade," "The Young And The Restless," "Hot Lips is Back in Town," "Rally Round the Flagg, Boys," "Ain't Love Grand," "The Party," and many others.
Theater Release Date: 1970 Length: 116 minutes Distributor: 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment DVD Release Date: 09/07/2004 Director: Robert Altman Cast: Elliott Gould, Donald Sutherland, Sally Kellerman, Tom Skerritt, Robert Duvall, Jo Ann Pflug, Rene Auberjonois, Roger Bowen
Plot: With the release of Robert Altman's MASH in 1970, a new form of comedy was brought to the big screen that would forever change the face of cinema. Altman's insistence on overlapping the characters' dialogue, photographing the film with fog filters and sloppy zooms, and a frank combination of jarringly graphic surgery footage with cynical humor, resulted in a timeless comedy that reflects the American counterculture's growing distrust of religion and government in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Politics aside, MASH is a classic motion picture that skyrocketed Altman to the upper ranks of Hollywood directors. Based on the novel by Richard Hooker, MASH follows a group of Mobile Army Surgical Hospital officers as they perform surgery and pass the time just miles from the front lines of the Korean Conflict. Led by the sardonic Captains "Hawkeye" Pierce (Donald Sutherland) and "Trapper" John McIntyre (Elliott Gould), the film has the feel of an absurd three-ring circus, and is composed of a series of vignettes rather than a traditionally unfolding narrative, creating that freewheeling feel so unique to early-'70s cinema.
