After watching this my reaction was "awesome, wow". This is a great action film directed by John Woo, who would eventually go on to later direct
Broken Arrow,
Face Off, and
Mission Impossible 2. Movie begins in 1967 Hong Kong introducing the audience to three extremely close friends Ben, Frank, and Paul, all from working class families barely getting by. Paul dreams of one day being able to drive a Mercedes Benz. On Ben's wedding night the three friends go into hiding after Ben and Frank kill a local gang member during a vicious fight. The three eventually find their way to Saigon, during the time of the Vietnam War. As expected Vietnam is in the middle of war and the place is chaotic and the three almost get killed soon after arriving there. They start to make a living off petty theft, until one day when they decide to strike a blow against a gang leader. The scene is a melee of bullets, machine guns, and explosions. In their attempt to runaway and return to Hong Kong, the three get captured as prisoners by the Vietcong who mistakenly believe the three may be working for the CIA. In the makeshift Vietcong prisoner of war camp, the three witness the Vietcong soldiers amusing themselves by torturing the prisoners of war. The three again almost get killed. Basically the story is wild, lots of new things happening here and there, and well executed action scenes everywhere. It's great.
