The movie is about a year in the life of Juno MacGuff, a witty 16 year old girl who unexpectedly finds herself pregnant. The father is a classmate by the name of Paulie Bleeker. She initially plans to undergo an abortion but changes her mind while at the abortion clinic. When Juno decides to have the baby, her friend suggests searching for potential parents in the Penny Saver ads. They come across an ad put out by an affluent young couple. For a young girl who finds herself unexpectedly pregnant, it is amazing how confident and unphased Juno seems to be throughout most of the movie. A young girl who suddenly finds herself having to make very adult decisions, Juno stays poised and confident refusing to play the role of helpless young victim. Its characters are out of the ordinary in this sense. For example, her boyfriend and baby's father Paulie Bleeker is a jock, but about the most un-jock like jock you've probably ever seen. A coming of age movie with an unexpected plot and characters, a lot of the movie's charm comes from the characters, especially Juno played by
Ellen Page. The movie won an
Oscar in the original screenplay category.
